Author Visits

I am excited to offer a wide range of activities and programs for learners young and old!  In addition to what I have listed below, I am a teacher who likes to differentiate instruction, so I would be happy to tailor my visit to anything you would like me to accommodate in your classroom, school, library, or other setting.

School Visits

Elementary Schools

For school visits, I am available to speak to a whole student body via an assembly or to visit a number of classrooms, or particular grade levels.  I will read my book aloud with the students, talk about my journey to becoming an author, encourage them to follow their dreams and always enjoy their creativity, and give them a sneak-peek into other projects I am working on.  I will also tell students about the benefits of using e-books  and e-readers in addition to traditionally published texts including the highlighting feature, mobility, and ability to read “privately” so no one has to know how long (or short) your book selection is.  Additionally, I would be happy to send students home with a signed picture which is an image from the book, and it will also explain how to access the book at home- which can be purchased at MeeGenius.com by searching “centipede.”

Beyond working with the students in the building, I am happy to coach teachers and staff in the area of e-books, e-resources and incorporating them into the curriculum and would be happy to provide a workshop for this.  MeeGenius is very similar to Book Flix, One More Story, and Pebble Go in that their titles are broken up into different searchable topics, and the students can choose to either read the text quietly themselves, or have it read aloud to them.

Middle Schools

Middle Schoolers have so much energy and creativity!  Students can channel that energy into creative writing!  Writing is also such a wonderful outlet for expressing emotions and problems in a positive way.  Why not write a poem about your bad day, great day, annoying sibling, family pet?  My story was inspired when I was doing some laundry in my house and I came across a creepy bug!  I would share my story with students on my path to becoming an author and share my actual book as well.  Students can realize that it takes a lot of rejection  sometimes (this was the third story I had sent this particular publisher!) to get something that you want!  Furthermore, I can discuss with students the importance of, and real-life application of, the writing process.  Where would I be if I sent in my first sloppy copy of any of my stories?  UNPUBLISHED!  This can be presented as a whole-school assembly, or to particular classes or grades.

In addition to the main presentation, I would be happy to work with students on their writing ideas as a writing workshop, tips for editing and revising and how not to get discouraged, and how to get the creative juices flowing.

As another option I can do a workshop about emotions.  The book discusses feeling “unappreciated” as the centipede feels he is helping “The Lady Upstairs” who is always running away shrieking from him.  Middle School can be a time where students are unsure about themselves and how others view them.

Libraries and PreSchools, Kindergarten and Pre-K classes

I love the excitement and curiosity of small children!  They are just learning how to read, and it is my pleasure to share my book with them!  After we read the book and discuss it, we will create centipedes and enjoy a few coloring pages right out of the book!  These young readers will also receive an autographed image from my book with information on how to get their own copy of the story.
